Dallas Cowboys (1–2)
Porter arrives as Dallas looks for a defensive reset
Dallas heads into its Houston matchup looking to get back to .500. The biggest new development is cornerback Joey Porter Jr., acquired in a trade this week. Stephen Jones said Friday that Porter will get snaps against the Texans. His exact workload remains a question as he gets familiar with Dallas' defense.
Jerry Jones has expressed interest in keeping Porter beyond his current contract. That is a longer-term storyline to follow; an extension has not been announced. For this weekend, the immediate story is whether the new arrival can contribute quickly to a defense dealing with several absences.
There is also encouraging news in the secondary. Malik Hooker and Shavon Revel practiced fully Friday and carry no game-status designation. Dallas elevated defensive backs Reddy Steward and Juanyeh Thomas from the practice squad Saturday, adding options before the trip to Houston.

Key injuries & players not playing
| Player | Status / injury |
|---|---|
| DeMarvion Overshown, LB | OUT — Hamstring |
| Cobie Durant, CB | OUT — Hamstring |
| P.J. Locke, S | Injured reserve — Foot |
| Jalen Thompson, S | Sidelined — Hamstring; team reported at least four weeks |
| Jonathan Bullard, DT | Sidelined — Calf; team reported three to five weeks |
Rookie Jaishawn Barham has been filling in for Overshown. Hooker, Revel and Porter offer reinforcements, but their availability does not erase the missing depth elsewhere. Dallas will need its replacements to communicate clearly and handle their assignments from the opening series.
Our analysis: Protect Dak, help the defense
Houston's Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter make pass protection a central matchup. Dallas needs manageable down-and-distance situations so the Texans cannot simply attack Dak Prescott on every snap. A balanced attack could also give the Cowboys' defense valuable recovery time.
The defensive question is how quickly the available pieces can play together. Watch Porter's early snaps, the response after explosive plays, and whether Dallas can finish pressure opportunities. Getting healthier in the secondary is useful; turning that availability into a complete performance is the next step.
San Francisco 49ers (3–0)
Unbeaten 49ers face a depth test up front
San Francisco enters Week 4 unbeaten after opening victories over the Rams, Dolphins and Cardinals. Denver is next at Levi's Stadium. The immediate concern is availability on the defensive front, where Nick Bosa, James Thompson Jr. and Mykel Williams have been ruled out.
Williams had his practice window opened this week after starting the season on reserve/PUP. His return to limited work is a development to follow, but it does not mean he will play Sunday. Bosa and Thompson missed practice throughout the week.
The receiver picture also needs monitoring. Mike Evans is questionable with a ribs injury, returning to limited practice Friday after missing the first two sessions. San Francisco promoted Brandin Cooks to the active roster Wednesday, providing another option in the passing game.

Key injuries & players not playing
| Player | Status / injury |
|---|---|
| Nick Bosa, DL | OUT — Knee/calf |
| James Thompson Jr., DL | OUT — Ankle |
| Mykel Williams, DL | OUT — Knee |
| Mike Evans, WR | Questionable — Ribs |
| Dre Greenlaw, LB | Questionable — Quadricep |
| Keion White, DL | Questionable — Hamstring |
| Jaden Dugger, LB | Questionable — Shoulder |
Questionable means availability remains unresolved; it is not a confirmed absence. Romello Height and Trent Williams have no game-status designation. That distinction matters when judging how much of the lineup could be available on Sunday.
Our analysis: Depth is the story
San Francisco's record gives it a strong opening platform, but the defensive absences change the questions for this matchup. Watch whether the remaining front can generate pressure without forcing extra defenders into the rush. If pressure requires more aggressive calls, the coverage behind it becomes especially important.
On offense, Evans' status makes flexibility valuable. The 49ers need to keep the passing game organized whether he plays or sits. Cooks' promotion supplies an option, while the team can adjust its approach around the players who are available.
This is a useful early test of the roster beyond its headline names. A fast start is encouraging, but maintaining it requires depth, reliable assignments and a plan that fits the actual game-day lineup. Sunday's inactive list will provide the final answer on the questionable players.
Carolina Panthers (1–2)
Next man up under the prime-time lights
Carolina hosts Detroit on Sunday night with a growing list of missing players. Saturday brought a significant update: wide receiver Xavier Legette went on injured reserve. He was already ruled out this week, but the move means the Panthers will be without him for at least the next four games.
The Panthers elevated receiver Ja'seem Reed and cornerback Robert Rochell from the practice squad Saturday. Reed adds cover while Jalen Coker's availability remains uncertain. Coker is questionable with a quadriceps injury, and the team planned to keep evaluating him through the weekend.
Carolina also received better news at tackle. Rookie Monroe Freeling cleared the concussion protocol Saturday and was cleared to play, updating his earlier questionable designation. Guard Damien Lewis remains out with an elbow injury.

Key injuries & players not playing
| Player | Status / injury |
|---|---|
| Xavier Legette, WR | Injured reserve — Knee |
| Damien Lewis, G | OUT — Elbow |
| Jaycee Horn, CB | Injured reserve — Quadriceps |
| Mike Jackson, CB | Injured reserve — Groin |
| Jalen Coker, WR | Questionable — Quadriceps |
| Cam Jackson, DT | Questionable — Knee |
| Lee Hunter, DT | Questionable — Foot |
Akayleb Evans and Will Lee III move into the starting cornerback roles after Horn and Jackson went on injured reserve. That makes the secondary another major part of the next-man-up story. Bryce Young carries no game-status designation on the Friday report.
Our analysis: Make the replacements' jobs manageable
Carolina needs offensive consistency to keep a depleted defense from carrying the entire night. With Lewis missing and the receiver rotation changing, clean protection calls and dependable routes become especially important. Freeling's clearance helps, but the offense still has to adapt to the players it has.
Detroit can test the new cornerback combination, so communication in the secondary deserves close attention. Watch how Carolina helps its replacements and whether it can avoid allowing one mistake to become a sequence of damaging plays.
The Panthers do not need every replacement to become a star overnight. They need disciplined assignments, fewer wasted possessions and timely contributions. The prime-time setting gives this reshaped lineup a visible test. Coker's final status and the defensive tackle decisions will be worth checking when Sunday's inactive list is released.
